NRS™ is NUCAP© Industries’ patented process for the surface modification of disc brake backing plates, adding a consistent matrix of raised steel hooks that facilitate a mechanical bond between disc brake plate and friction materials. The NRS™ hooks provide mechanical bonding while exceeding industry requirements for heat, shear and environmental delamination protection.

A backing plate is the steel part which attaches to the friction material making up a brake pad.

Backing plates are the foundation of a brake pad. They must be able to withstand the harsh braking environment and maintain attachment with the friction material. The harsh braking climate can lead to brake pad failure as a result of separation between friction material and the backing plate. This can result from adhesive breakdown which leads to a complete separation between friction material and braking plate. Inferior steel can also lead to brake pad failure, highlighting the importance of using steel which is either pickled and oiled or galvanized.

It is the process of coating iron and steel with zinc, which alloys with the surface of the base metal resulting in a strong material that protects the steel underneath from further corrosion in many circumstances. Galvanized steel is widely used in applications where corrosion resistance is needed, and is considered superior in terms of cost and life-cycle.

It is twofold. Inferior steel and glued attachment between backing plate and friction material compromise safety. NRS uses galvanized steel because it is ideal to prevent corrosion. Mechanical attachment is a mechanism that does not fail. NRS is the world’s most advanced mechanical attachment.
